Masha is drowning. Once a spirited, independent woman with a rebellious streak, her life has been forever changed by a tragic event 12 years ago. Unable to let go of her grief, she finds solace in the silent company of the souls of her local Victorian cemetery and at the town's lido, where she seeks refuge underwater - safe from the noise and the pain. But a chance encounter with two extraordinary women - the fabulous and wise Kitty Muriel, a convent girl-turned-magician's wife-turned-seventy-something-roller-disco-fanatic, and the mysterious Sally Red Shoes, a bag lady with a prodigious voice - opens up a new world of possibilities, and the chance to start living again. Until the fateful day when the past comes roaring back.

The second novel from RH is Masha's journey through her grief following the loss of her son 12years prior. She punishes herself at the local pool by holding herself under water for as long as possible to practice drowning & visiting the local cemetery to find solace amongst the dead. What could be a depressing theme is written with wit and humour, an eclectic bunch of characters including Kitty Muriel & Sally who become her friends. Slowly Masha emerges though her grief with their help, Alice's story is also sad & linked to Masha's but is not revealed until the end. Things I Loved: her car was called Edith Piaf, Edward's dog is a Lord Byron, solicitor is Justin Case. Quote example "there are Crimson swagged curtains with as many frills & flounces as a can can dancers skirts" & chapter 51, the whole process of getting ready to go out tied to a whole list of music, genius.
