Notes:
It's time to solve the murder of the century. Forty years ago, Steven Smith found a copy of a famous children's book by disgraced author Edith Twyford, its margins full of strange markings and annotations. Wanting to know more, he took it to his English teacher Miss Isles, not realising the chain of events that he was setting in motion. Miss Isles became convinced that the book was the key to solving a puzzle, and that a message in secret code ran through all Twyford's novels. Then Miss Isles disappeared on a class field trip, and Steven's memory won't allow him to remember what happened. Now, out of prison after a long stretch, Steven decides to investigate the mystery that has haunted him for decades. Was Miss Isles murdered? Was she deluded? Or was she right about the code? And is it still in use today?

An intriguing mystery involving an ex-criminal, a disgraced children’s author and a load of missing gold! Steven Smith has recently been released from prison and is determined to solve the mystery of the disappearance of his English teacher many years ago. Along the way, and with the help of old friends, he tries to untangle The Twyford Code – a series of bizarre clues hidden in a series of children’s books written in the 1940’s. The novel is written in the form of audio transcripts, which I found sometimes confusing and a bit frustrating, but the story is fast-paced and with an air of subtle menace; especially as you learn about Steven’s criminal past and how he ended up in prison. I really enjoyed the ending, which turns the story on it’s head, and makes you realise that everything you had assumed is wrong!
