Notes:
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city centre, where expectant mothers who have come down with an unfamiliar flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders: Doctor Kathleen Lynn, on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world.

Reviews
Thanks to our wonderful libraries and the staff who run them, great new books have been available during the pandemic. This novel is in a class of its own. It is set in Dublin at the time of the 1918 flu pandemic. Julia is a maternity nurse devoted to the care of mothers in the late stages of pregnancy and suffering from this deadly disease. They are subjected to the misogynistic attitudes of their time, and to the cruel practices of the nuns who run the orphanages and homes for unwed mothers. Their stories are gripping and heart rending. This book couldn't be more timely, and it's simply brilliant.
