Mickey Haller gets the text, 'Call me ASAP - 187', and the California penal code for murder immediately gets his attention. Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays, and they always mean Haller has to be at the top of his game. When Mickey learns that the victim was his own former client, a prostitute he thought he had rescued and put on the straight and narrow path, he knows he is on the hook for this one. He soon finds out that she was back in LA and back in the life. Far from saving her, Mickey may have been the one who put her in danger. Haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mickey must work tirelessly and bring all his skill to bear on a case that could mean his ultimate redemption or proof of his ultimate guilt.

Connelly made his name and reputation with Harry Bosch, a dysfunctional cop who gets results. In developing his repertoire he introduced I enjoyed Mickey Haller, aka The “Lincoln Lawyer” so named for having his office in his car. This is not a spoiler but there is a connection between Bosch and Haller. This story involves a Pimp for a call girl who stands accused of killing one of his women over a money dispute. There is some previous between the victim an Haller a she is someone whom he looked after a while back and helped on a path to a normal life. However Leopards don't change their spots and she had been working as a grass for a DEA agent. As you would expect the accused looks set-up and Haller begins to examine plausible alternatives to help sustain reasonable doubt against a backdrop which seems like justice is the last thing the Presecution want. No surprises there. The plot takes us into Haller enlisting the help of a mobster in prison. You also become involved with some
