'The Buried Giant' begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.

This was not a particularly well liked book amongst the group and some struggled to finish the book. Set at a time when the Saxons and Britons had been fighting viciously the novel moves us forward to an uneasy peace which has been brought about by collective amnesia administered in the form of an enveloping mist spread by the breath of a she dragon, Querig. All the characters involved have lost all memories of the wars of love and of peace. If you relate the book to The Wizard of Oz the travellers are going on a journey or quest to find justice, love, a mother or to slay the she dragon. As the she dragon loses her power the mists clear and memories return exposing the buried past, the forgiveness of the past is exposed with a feeling that we can possibly forgive the past but do we ever truly forget.
