I really enjoyed this book. I found it funny, clever, and also quite informative despite its satirical nature. As well as raising a smile, I also laughed out loud in parts, as the style of writing (mocking in places, but not sneeringly cynical) is clever. I admit to liking to understand history, so the topic matter held interest, but I do think this might appeal to those who might not be so keen. It's certainly worth a try. I've not read anything else by John Farrell, so I didn't know what to expect, though I'm going to reserve one of his other titles now to give it a try!

The author of the "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" series has written her first adult novel. In a similar style to Anita Shreve, Brashares writes a slow-burning love story dealing with family, love and death. It's a well-written beach read.

The Knife that Killed Me by Anthony McGowan, is a very timely and gripping tale for teens. It does what it says on the tin...you're pretty sure what is going to happen... but why did it happen and how? who are the players? why do they feel the way they do? It assaults the senses - you can feel the knife coming...... the build up, the tension...Grim, but compelling, very well written and very thought provoking...

This is the first time I listened to Jojo Moyes on audio book. At first I wondered if I would last until the end, but somehow it grew and I became eager to hear how the characters progressed. Set mainly in Australia, its a tale of families, betrayal, money, power and lessons learnt. It's good to have an audio book on the go whilst washing the car, tidying the garden, sitting in the sun, and this is just the book to listen to. I recommend.

A family tale that twists and turns. Written imaginitively and read very well. This tale winds through a couple of generations of a large family, linking past events, with present situations. I do not know how good this would be if you read it yourself, but I thoroughly recommend the audio copy. I'm fairly new to Jojo Moyes, this being the second I've tried and I am happy to listen to the others as a consequence. Very well done - I heartily recommend.

This title is the second in the series involving Rachel Morgan a white witch. [Witches being genetically distinct from normal humans and thus not fatally valnerable to a rogue GM virus carried by a tomatoe species!] It is like an interesting meld of Janet Evanovich's bounty hunter/crime solver "Stephenie Plum" and a number of undead series such as those by Charliene Harris or Teri Arthur. I found it hard to put down as I read to find out who was responsisble for the ley line witch killings ... The antics of Jenks and his pixie family (living in a stump in the back yard of the former church where Rachel resides) with her living, vampire, friend Ivy add a comic conterpart to the darker story line. After reading this series you may consider ketchup in a whole new light!

Eva Ibbotson's "The Dragonfly Pool" is a cracking great adventure story for 8-11s, following an evacuees adventures during 1939. It features a fiesty heroine, a country (and young prince) in peril, an "alternative" boarding school, quirky characters, a mysterious and much loved teacher, an epic journey across a war torn country, friendships across divides...Highly recommended
